Macrophotography Workshop

My macrophotography workshops run throughout the spring and summer months. If you are interested in macrophotography and want to learn how to take better photographs this course is definitely for you. You will receive expert one to one tuition from myself at a beautiful location in Worcestershire. We will be concentrating on flora and insects (particularly butterflies) in a truly stunning English meadow. Due to the nature of the subject matter, it is essential that we get an early start for this workshop. Insects are fairly docile at dawn and therefore easier to photograph.

Macrophotography is a highly disciplined genre which calls for great patience and technique. I will give you my expert advice and help you to achieve some stunning macro shots of your own.  Some of the topics covered on the day of the workshop include:

  • Aperture – The benefits of using a large aperture (f2.8 -3.5) for macro work and the relationship between subject and out-of-focus bokeh.
  • Taking more control of your cameras settings – the drawbacks of using full auto mode and the advantages of changing your camera mode to manual and AV priority.
  • Shoot in RAW format – We’ll address the difference between shooting RAW as opposed to JPG format.
  • What is ISO and what ISO setting should I be using for macrophotography?
  • We will also discuss how to meter and correctly expose difficult subjects.
  • Composition, specifically the ‘rule of thirds’ and how this technique can help improve your photography.
  • Using a tripod successfully and how this technique will improve your final image.
  • Fill-in-flash – it’s definition and how best to utilise, using different techniques.

Equipment - There are a number of things you will need to bring on the day of a workshop, these include:

  • DSLR camera (inc. memory cards).
  • Tripod.
  • Macro lens.
  • Wide angle lens (optional).
  • Remote shutter release (recommended).
  • Sturdy, waterproof footwear. Walking boots are ideal.
  • Outdoor or waterproof trousers and coat.
  • Packed lunch for mid morning snack.
  • Liquid refreshment – bottled water is essential.

This is very popular photography workshop for macro enthusiasts and naturalists alike. Please contact me for availability in summer 2012.

NB - Please note that this workshop starts at dawn and runs throughout the spring and summer months. As we start early there is no time to cover the theory side of this workshop – particularly the ‘rule of thirds’. Theoretical information covered in this workshop can be found on a separate page (password protected) of this site which you can read prior to attending. Once you have booked onto the workshop I will send you a link and password for the page. We will run over all the subjects covered during the debrief session at the end of the workshop.

Price: £130.00* (* price includes lunch and debrief session)
